Why Do MLCCs Crack, and How Can Flexible Termination Help?

 

MLCCs are widely used in modern electronic systems because of their compact size, stable electrical performance, and high reliability. However, ceramic materials are inherently brittle, which means excessive mechanical stress can create cracks and potentially affect long-term circuit reliability.

 

Why Do MLCC Cracks Occur?

 

Mechanical stress can be introduced during PCB assembly, soldering, board depaneling, mounting, or even during normal operation when the PCB bends or expands under temperature changes.

Because a conventional MLCC has relatively rigid terminations, external stress transferred from the PCB may reach the ceramic body directly. In demanding applications, repeated bending or thermal-mechanical stress can increase the risk of internal cracking.

Flexible termination MLCCs introduce an additional resin electrode layer at the end termination. This flexible layer helps absorb external mechanical stress before it reaches the ceramic body, reducing the possibility of crack formation.
